This highly-decorative, 19th century, apothecary pharmacy bottle cork press measures 9.75 inches long. An Art Nouveau stylized fleur de lis design enhancing this piece blends form and function in a lovely way!
Cork presses were a standard piece of equipment in early drug stores and apothecaries. Corks used to cap old glass drug bottles were first soaked in water and then compressed in the cork press before inserting them into the bottle.
The condition is very nice with no damage noted! There are 4 holes in the base for attaching the press to the pharmacist's working counter.
An interesting addition to your pharmacy collection!

Offered is Dr. C.H. Fitch's Prescription Scale-- a wonderful, early, pharmacist/doctor, portable, pocket-sized, Victorian era scale! The fancy-scrolled and embellished metal case appears to be brass with nickel plating and reads, "Dr. C.H. Fitch's Prescription Scale Pat Sept 29th 1885" on the top. The diminutive metal case with scale inside measures approximately 1.5" wide x 2.75" long x .75" deep and is in very nice, original condition. The scale's capacity is 1/2 to 20 grains. It was manufactured by the N.V. Randolph Paper Box Company, Richmond, VA.
Some history: Joseph Williamson Randolph (1815-1893) established his business as publisher, bookseller, and stationer in Richmond, Virginia, in 1831. By the early 1840s, he had formed a partnership with Joseph J. English, and the firm became one of the leading book dealers in the South by the time of the Civil War. After Randolph's death, his son, Norman Y. Randolph, operated the business until it passed into receivership. Norman Randolph was, at various times, president of the Randolph Paper Box Company, the Virginia State Insurance Company, and the Warwick Park Transportation Company. He also served as secretary-treasurer of the Virginia and North Carolina Wheel Company.

This extraordinarily unusual 7 piece collection of vintage RAW ROOTS & LEAVES date to the late 1800's - early 1900's!! They are from the A.D. Pierce Pharmacy which originated in Hartford, Connecticut, at 914 Main Street during the late 19th century. The store later relocated to 247 Sigourney Street in Hartford as A.D. Pierce and Son. One package is marked PARKE DAVIS – “BUTTERNUT” - Bark of Root, measures 8” x 5”, and is in a one pound package. The other 6 wrapped packages feature hand-written content labels and are as follows: “Pd. Poplar Bark” 5” x 2” – “Pink Root” 4” x 4” x2” – “Beth Root” 3”x2” – Poke Root” 5” x4” x2” – a plastic bag of “Buchu Leaves” 8”x 6” x 2” and “Alkanit Root” in an 8” x 5” paper wrapper. Aside from the Buchu Leaves, the packages are in “as found” but generally quite good condition considering their substantial age and very fragile nature! Fabulous to display just as they are in their original packaging, lending an authentic, apothecary-shoppe-look to your personal collection!! Or fill your early glass apothecary bottles with vintage contents!!
