SOLD

Offered for sale is a wonderful drug store thermometer advertising various "BEEMAN'S" medicine products from the 1940-1950 era. The top portion is marked "B.Q.R" for Cold Discomforts. The lower section touts the benefits of "B.G.O" Ointment which was for "Burns, Poison Ivy, Insect Bites, Corns, Sunburn, Perspiring Feet, and Athletes Feet!" Sounds like a modern day quack medicine!

Constructed in metal and painted in a bright yellow with black lettering and interesting graphics, this sign has wonderful and vivid visual appeal!

Measures 6" x 16" and in very nice condition with some subtle surface scratches, a few flaws and some minor white paint residue on the bottom edge (see photos). The thermometer is quite functional and is ready for your collection!

SOLD

This fabulous 1930's American Beach cast iron sign reading "AMERICAN BEACH FLA Negro Ocean Playground" is in excellent condition with all original paint and vintage patina. This is NOT a reproduction! This sign was originally sold to be used as a license plate topper by African American folks frequenting this beach. It measures 11 inches in length x 4.50 inches high at its tallest point. Rarely found with this much original paint!

American Beach was established in 1935 on Florida's east coast under the leadership of Abraham Lincoln Lewis, one of seven co-founders of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, and one of Florida's first black millionaires. His vision was to create a beach resort as a benefit for company executives and as an incentive for employees.

In the era of Jim Crow segregation laws, few public places in Florida or the rest of the South were open to African Americans. From the Depression until well into the 1960's, American Beach served as a holiday and vacation destination for thousands of African Americans, and was a magnet for black celebrities such as entertainers Cab Calloway and Ray Charles, heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis and writer Zora Neale Hurston.

But in 1964, the area began to decline. Hurricane Dora destroyed much of the beach, and passage of the Civil Rights Act meant that blacks were, finally, no longer restricted to segregated beaches and the businesses that catered to them.

A fabulous and historically relevant piece of Black Americana!

Rare Narrow Sized 19th Century Pharmacy Pill Machine

Rare Narrow Sized 19th Century Pharmacy Pill Machine

SOLD

This handsome brass and walnut pharmacy PILL MACHINE was used by 19th century druggists in a Southington, Connecticut, apothecary shoppe.

The unique quality of this machine is its substantially narrow width given the fact that it has 24 pill-making tubes. Per example: this machine is only 5.25 inches wide while I own a 12 tube machine that is only 3/4 of an inch narrower! Also, the pill machine is marked on both pieces by the maker, WIRZ, a rarity for pill machines.

The pill machine was successfully developed to increase a pharmacist's pill production. This particular pill machine has 24 tubes or grooves; however, pill machines were also made with 12, 18 or even up to 50 tubes!

The condition of this wonderful apothecary tool of the trade is very good with the normal surface scratches, blemishes and minor dings all of which contribute to the warm, rich patina one would expect of an antique tool of this age. The bright sunlight makes the wood appear light and washed-out- please disregard. The color of the wood has appropriately darkened and gained a rich patina over the years.

The base measures 12.5”L x 5.25”W, and the handle is 14 inches long. The base and handle are matching units as evidenced by the #428 stamped on each part.

19th century Pill Machines are becoming increasingly difficult to find in this wonderful condition. A must addition for any pharmacy/apothecary collection.

It measures a mammoth 18 inches long and is perfect for display in any dental collection, including in the dentist's office!

The condition is very good with some scratches and unobtrusive bent bristles (perhaps it was slightly used by the Jolly Green Giant??).

A truly unique and quite amusing dental display piece!!! A terrific conversation starter or fun teaching tool!!!

SOLD

This is one of the most-difficult-to-find pharmacy implements that I have had the privilege to offer for sale in a long time!

Circa 1890's, this implement is referred to as a "Pharmacy Pill Sorter" and was mounted to the top counter of a drugstore work station.

The instrument has a sliding top for counting or sorting various size pills. The top also slides forward as the machine tilts down. This movement drops the pills into the metal chute for dispensing into the proper receptacle.

This piece has wonderful patina! Wear is commensurate with age and use. The condition is very good with one split to the side and a small piece of metal chipped from where the screw is fastened to the base (see photos).

The instrument measures approximately 18"L x 15"W x 11"H and weighs over 13 pounds. Manufactured by the Arthur Colton Co., Detroit, Michigan; dates to the 1890s. The Colton Co. continued as a manufacturer of more efficient and mechanized apparatus for the drug industry well into the 20th century.

Measuring 25.5 inches wide x 22 inches high in its original oak frame (the artwork itself measures 19.5 inches x 16.5 inches), this extremely rare, museum-quality example of American Folk Art with Deep South Black Americana theme, features the unusual combination of stenciled (?) cotton, crewel stitch-work, and oil and watercolor painting to achieve its phenomenal look!

Cheerily entitled, “Down Where The Cotton Blossoms Grow”, the scene encapsulates a moment in time in the life of poor, southern, Black folk living as part of a tenant farming family in a wooden cabin at the edge of a expansive cotton field. A young, barefoot black boy and his graying mama are caught in a happy moment smiling and dancing next to a freshly-picked burlap bag of cotton.

This artwork has been completed on a tightly woven piece of tan cotton, with the outline of the basic design either pre-stenciled or hand-painted with black India ink. (Without removing the piece from its frame and examining it under the stronger power of a microscope, this is difficult to determine.)

The artist then used watercolors to paint in the broad areas of color prior to using embroidery cotton and silk thread to stitch the title, and to outline the trees, the landscape, the wooden cabin, the two black figures and their clothing, etc. The final touch was to paint in the cotton blossoms and aspects of the folk’s facial features with a white oil paint. The result is a larger scale, utterly charming Folk Art Black Americana scene!

The condition of the piece, which is framed under glass, is excellent with no staining, tears, or other damage to the cotton fabric. The original solid oak frame shows some scuffing and subtle traces of paint. The original wood backing remains as well as several original square head nails.

This piece is truly a unique example of traditional, late 19th century, American Folk Art! Coupled with its Black Americana theme, this artistic rendering is a rare and precious offering!

The leather case measures 6"L x 4"W x 1.5"H and the corked bottles are just about 3" without cork. No damage to the glass.

Measuring a diminutive 10 inches wide x 7 inches high, this RARE, Circa 1880's, tin, drug store advertisement is sure to generate conversation at your next cocktail party!

The sign states:

"Scott's Santal-Pepsin Capsules A Positive CURE for Kidney and Bladder Diseases.

Cures Quickly And Permanently The Most Obstinate Case of Gonorrhea and Gleet No Matter of How Long Standing.

Absolutely Harmless.

Sold by Druggists Price $1.00.

SOLD BY PHELPS PHARMACY, F.W. Beavees, Mgr., Cor. Wyoming Ave. and Spruce St., Se******, PA."

This amazing venereal disease cure sign features a most formidable likeness of Mr. Scott flanked by a Laurel Crown in the upper left hand corner, no doubt intended to add fortitude to the claims he makes of his product!

The sign was made by the Scioto Sign Co of Kenton, Ohio, and is so marked in the lower right corner.

This bright yellow sign shows ravages of its 118+ years of age, with crimps and creases to the tin, small holes-- no doubt made to hang the sign up--, scratches to the surface resulting in paint loss, and some superficial rusting where paint is missing. Some fading to lettering in the lower right.

Regardless of its "age marks", this sign is certainly a one-of-a-kind find that will add sparkle to a collection! May be hung on a wall on displayed on a shelf! Not to be missed!
