Condition: This is new old stock- never used or circulated; however, when opened to review condition for this listing, the front cover, unfortunately cracked at the seam, likely due to dryness. Otherwise perfect.

Summary: Abridged, children's version of the original classic.
Condition: Fragile. Significant overall wear to cover, especially at edges and at binding, creasing of covers. Pages are partially separating from the cover. Pages have tanned with age; some pages have small tears, all pages are present. One illustration was colored in with crayons.

Summary:The classic tale of Little Black Sambo and his tiger encounter!
Condition: A 9.5 out of 10! This books has seen very little use with just a teeny bit of wear to book edge points. Otherwise, perfect!
She wears a green headscarf with white polka dots and a grouping of five, cream-colored, choker-style necklaces around her neck. Her lips are painted a bright red and her dark eye(s) is large and luminous.
The headscarf is constructed of fabric that has been coated with a stiffener--it almost feels like a very soft leather. The necklaces appear to be wire; the woman's head and neck are constructed from some sort of a composite material.

Edwin DuBose Heyward (August 31, 1885 – June 16, 1940) was an American author who was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina. He is best known for his 1925 novel Porgy. He and his wife Dorothy, a playwright, adapted it as a 1927 play of the same name. The couple worked with composer George Gershwin to adapt the work as the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. It was later adapted as a 1959 film of the same name. Heyward also wrote poetry and other novels and plays, and this book of selected poems reflected his observations of and experiences with black culture in Charleston during his childhood.
From approximately 1915 through the 1930's, Mrs. Vargas-Alphonso, influenced by the artistry of her father who also sculpted in wax, crafted a variety of wax dolls inspired by the black folk she saw on New Orleans's street corners while growing up. Sold exclusively at the time through Harriet's, of 318 Rue Royale in the French Quarter of New Orleans, the completely hand-made, one-of-a-kind dolls are seldom found on today's market due to their inherently fragile nature, making them highly sought after in the Black Memorabilia Collectible arena.
The female figure is known as the Praline Seller as her business was to sell freshly made Pralines, a candy confection composed of Louisiana cane sugar and pecans. Her straw, woven basket contains four Praline cookies or flatbreads.
The male figure is known as the grapevine and/or alligator seller. The grapevines are tied in a large bundle on his back which he also supports using the rope in his right hand, while leading a young alligator along in his left.
Vargas wax figures are distinctly characterized by their interesting but highly exaggerated facial features.
The Praline Seller wears a vividly colorful array of different pattern fabrics which work to comprise her eye-catching costume. Atop her head, she wears a large, green and red polka dot bandanna that allows a bit of her wildly-curly, dark hair to peek through, with a solid yellow bandanna tied around her neck. Her her red, cream and blue patterned blouse and skirt are partially protected by a rather sedate, cream-colored apron. All of her clothing is constructed of actual cloth fabric that was coated with a fine layer of clear wax to stiffen it. She carries her basket of pralines on her right arm, while holding a piece of paper in her right hand. A written price list, perhaps? In her left hand she carries a reed duster to keep the flies off of her confections!
The Grapevine/Alligator also wears fabric clothing coated in wax. His pink, white and blue patterned bandanna is tied around his neck and worn over a red, blue and yellow plaid shirt and blue denim pants. He is missing his hat-- perhaps, the alligator ate it?! He holds onto the gator's rope in his left hand while trying to balance the huge mound of grapevine on his back via a rope end clutched in his right hand.
The figures' wax bodies are internally supported by wire frames through which the figures are securely attached to the wooden base. The bottom of each base retains its original stamp which reads, "Genuine VARGAS New Orleans, LA".
These wonderful figures are in near mint condition for their 75+ years of age. The Praline Seller perhaps has lost a couple of her pralines from her basket over the years, an insignificant detail, or perhaps her basket was never meant to be filled to indicate that she had already successfully made some sales! The Grapevine/Alligator is missing his hat as noted earlier, as well as two of his fingers on his left hand, a common injury as they are so very, very thin and inherently fragile. The young Alligator is missing the tip of his tail and the tip of the top of his mouth, again, two very thin pieces of wax which were vulnerable to easily breaking off.

Following the conclusion of World War II, the American Tobacco Company of Virginia changed its product name from Nigger Hair to Bigger Hair, seeking to broaden the product's marketing appeal as well as viewing the latter label as the more-socially acceptable one. (The earlier Nigger Hair moniker was used by the American Tobacco Company from the 1890's through the early, pre-WWII 1940s; the lithographed can was manufactured by the B. Leidersdorf Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.) Interestingly, the company DID NOT change the image of the African woman, but merely added the words Fiji Islander to the left of her face in its indifferent and weak attempt to move further away from the earlier, severely derogatory label.
Measuring 7 inches high x 5 3/4 inches wide, the container is in good condition, perhaps a 7 out of 10, with one side exhibiting minor surface scuffing, while on the other side more scuffs and rubs are evident. Some minor wear around the edge of the top of the container likely occurred from simply taking the cover on and off; however, this is completely concealed by the cover. The original cardboard cover was lost with the passage of time; the replacement tin cover shown was in place when this container was acquired.
The original brownish orange color of the container remains consistent throughout, and the structural integrity of the cardboard is quite sturdy. Superficial rust is evident on the inside and outside of the metal base; this rust does not impact integrity of the tin base. The container retains partial remnants of its paper Federal Revenue Tobacco seal on both sides.
This very rare tobacco container is just a wonderful example of latter Black Americana advertising. The container looks better "in person" than in the photos as the camera actually accentuated the appearance of the scuffing, especially on the "better" side!

1) This darling, ALL-ORIGINAL, tin, baby buggy was made C1950, by the Ohio Arts Company and displays bright lithographic scenes of children playing on each side. It is approximately 7 inches long by 3” wide. The Ohio Arts logo is printed on each side of the carriage. There are slots on each side for the hood to be moved to either the front or rear of the carriage and then lock into position.
It is in wonderful, near-perfect condition with all original parts, with lovely paint and bright, perfect lithographs. The wheels are slightly tarnished but still display shiny hubcaps and work well. There is a very unobtrusive surface scratch on the front base of the carriage; the handle is in excellent condition with no rust or dents. It obviously was either played with very gently or only used for display! Rated 9 out of 10 condition!
2) This 1936, 1st Edition book, "Wooden Toy Making" by Winifred M. Horton, was published by the Dryad Press, Great Britain, with illustrations by the author and M. McLeish. 57 pages of instructions and both colored and black and white illustrations for making a wide variety of movable toys. (See photos 9 & 10) This book was put together for use by teachers in the classroom who did not have formal training in arts and crafts. A former library book, it contains some pencil markings and stamping on preface page. Cloth bound, with a reinforced exterior binding of black cloth book tape applied by library staff. Pages are tight as is binding. No tears. Edge wear to front and back boards. A very interesting book for the vintage toy enthusiast!
3) "The New Pony", 1st Edition, Copyright 1961, is part of the Little Golden Book series for children, prepared under the supervision of Mary Reed, Ph.D, formerly of Teachers College of Columbia University, New York. Published by Golden Press, New York, the story was written by Blanche Chenery Perrin with colored illustrations by Dagmar Wilson. (See photos 11 &12) Condition is very good: no writing, no torn pages, no scuffing, extremely subtle, nearly indiscernible edge wear to covers. A sweet story teaching a life lesson.
The first dexterity game features a beautiful and vividly-colored graphic cardboard housed in a metal casing of a black gentleman blowing smoke rings out of his mouth. The original cardboard backing remains intact. The game marked "Made in Germany", features a cut-out hole where the gentleman's mouth is. I do not know the rules or details of how the game was played. This game is in very nice condition, a 9 out of 10 rating, and displays wonderfully! Quite visually-appealing!
The second dexterity game features a Googly-Eyed African Native. It is also German-made and has a documented copyright history of 1914. The original string remains attached, and when pulled, the eyes circle around in their sockets! Two vertical pins attached to the back side make it possible to attach this game to clothing as a gag pin. Minor paint wear is evident, all parts are original and functional.

Prior to WWII, this pomade was offered in tins. Distributed by Dolly Dimple Laboratories, Atlanta, GA. Full of product. Never Opened. 9 out of 10 condition. Measures 2 5/8 inches high x 2 inches wide x 1 inch deep. Belongs in the Smithsonian's American History Museum in its WWII exhibit!

3 & 4) Copyrighted in 1938, these two LUCKY BROWN Pressing Oil Tins are both in 9 out of 10 condition, and both are empty. These tins are highly decorative, colorful and display wonderfully. Well-detailed, hand-painted face on a head made from a walnut, yarn hair, cotton clothing with pretty scalloped-edge skirt stamped, "I comes from N'Awlins". Fabric-coated wire feet and arms; body is a clothespin. Doll is holding a paper duster in her right hand and a rectangular woven straw basket with netted liner on her left arm. Very sweet!

5) C1940s, Rubber Nipple Mammy Doll, approx 3.25 inches tall. Cotton clothing and head scarf with hand stitched needlepoint-threaded, sewn-on eyes and mouth on the nipple head. Unmarked.
6) C1950s Bisque, unmarked female black doll with red bow atop head, swathed in unmanufactured cotton--likely a souvenir piece from one of the southern cotton growing states. Approx 3 inches tall, wired onto circular wood stand.
7) C1950s, Bisque ashtray with ashes and cigarette depositories. Marked "Made in Japan" in two places, and also "Ashes" and "Cigarettes". 10) A 1930's, Japan, colorfully decorated, Black Americana African Native Riding an Elephant Tea Pot in pristine condition! The elephant proudly points its trunk upward, awarding "Good Luck" (according to superstition) to anyone who displays it (or drinks their tea from it)! Cleverly designed, the elephant serves as the body of the tea pot, while the turbaned Black Native lifts off the elephant's back revealing its function as a tea pot lid, The elegantly curved elephant tail serves as the tea pot handle. The base is marked "MADE IN JAPAN" with a "T" inserted inside of each of two double diamonds. The tea pot measures 7 inches high by 9.5 inches long by 4.25 inches wide; the height measurement is taken from the top of the native's head, downward. Condition is excellent! This is a beautifully painted piece, with the copper and gold paint adding to its luminosity!
A wonderful collection of Kitchen-Black-Memorabilia, all being sold as one single grouping, coming out of the estate of the decades-old collection of a former Black Memorabilia dealer. A great purchasing opportunity!
The first is the large folio book, a 1931, First Edition, Copyright by Howard E. Altemus, David McKay Publishers, Philadelphia, Told and Pictured by Helen Bannerman. The book features many simply brilliantly-colored, full-color drawings that are truly the highlight of this book. They are just marvelous!
Condition: Binding is tight, all pages are present. The exterior shows soiling, edge wear and binding wear at the top and bottom. This was given as a 1937 Christmas gift from an aunt to her nephew and the book is so-inscribed on the inside cover. There is some soiling on the pages and a few pages have minor edge tears at the top, likely a result of page-turning. 59 pages. Condition is appropriate given the books 88 years of age!
The second book is the smaller folio, a 1940 edition, featuring three stories: Little Black Sambo, The Gingerbread Man, and Titty Mouse and Tatty Mouse. The book was first copyrighted in 1927 by Rand McNally & Company. This book also features lovely, full-color drawings that are just enchanting!
Condition: Binding is tight, all pages are present. The exterior shows soiling, edge wear and binding wear at the top and bottom. The penned name, "Meyere" is written on the inside cover. No rips, tape, repairs or soiling to pages. 64 pages. Condition is appropriate given the books 79 years of age!
The third book is a 1932, paperback edition, with a sturdy cover, and a total of eight pages. The books is finely illustrated in alternate black ink pen drawings and full color illustrations.
Condition: Binding is tight; all pages are present. There are no doodles or written inscriptions, rips, tape or creases to pages. The front and back covers show some evidence of light soiling, not at all significant or inconsistent with the book's age.
Three very sweet, early, vintage Sambo story books that are most reasonably priced, particularly given all of the value-less reproductions that most unfortunately flooding the collectible market these days!
Entitled "Science In Story", "Sammy Tubbs, The Boy Doctor and Sponsie, The Troublesome Monkey", this complete set was published in 1885.
The author, Dr. Edward Bliss Foote (1826-1906), a progressive, forward-thinking physician, was not only a steward of public hygiene and birth control, but was additionally an active abolitionist and civil rights advocate. Dr. Foote, in utilizing a story-telling, narrative format, hoped to promote children's education and understanding of anatomy and physiology as it was understood at that time. Each of the five volumes feature numerous, well-detailed, black and white illustrations. The volumes feature different body systems as follows:
Volume 1: The Bones, Cartilages, and Muscles, 230 pages
Volume 2: Circulation and Absorption, 232 pages
Volume 3: Digestive, Nutritive, Respiratory, and Vegetative Nervous Systems, 346 pages
Volume 4: Brain and Nerves: Cerebral Physiology, 256 pages
Volume 5: Elimination and Reproduction: (“A Book for Private Reading"), 252 pages
The stories feature an African-American boy, Sammy Tubbs, who, after being freed from slavery, travels North and finds employment at the home of a physician as a door-boy. Sammy soon begins an amazing educational journey learning about the body systems and organs of the human body as well as how to prevent and fight illness. An amusing pair of monkeys add comical interest to the stories. As Sammy grows up through the course of the five volumes, he aspires to follow the career path of his employer, attend medical school and become a doctor.
This series is quite remarkable for its era in that it features an accomplished, intellectually curious African American protagonist Additionally, it discusses and illustrates the taboo topic of female reproduction, and the socially radical topic of bi-racial romance, when a grown-up Sammy dates and is seen publicly kissing a Caucasian woman!
Condition: This clean, complete, and incredibly rare, 134 year old set is in very good condition, featuring tight bindings in all volumes. In Volumes 1, 2, 3 & 5, there additionally are no page rips, no missing pages, no pencil/pen markings or writings of any sort. All of the above conditions apply to Volume 4 with the exception of: page 62 has a 2 inch rip beginning at the top of the page with no missing paper and remaining perfectly readable, and page 149 features a publishers defect whereas the page size was over cut with the resulting page becoming crimped at the top portion of the page. Page 149 remains perfectly readable.
The set's condition suggests that these volumes were infrequently handled. Subtle, age-appropriate exterior wear is evident in various locations here and there: along book edges, along some bindings. Volume 5 shows slight cover scuffing. All five volumes have a very small area of superficial water staining at the top of the book near the binding, but the staining only extends onto the first four pages at the very, very top edge of those pages next to the binding, so this was not a significant water event. Each volume wears a bookplate on the inside cover; it appears that a previous bookplate in each book was carefully removed and replaced the current on which reads "Private Library, L. J. Bates, 18...., Not to be Loaned." Books measure 4" x 6".
This handsome sign measures 24 inches long x 6 inches high and 3/8 inches thick. There are 2 unobtrusive small holes on either side which were used when hanging the sign. Other than the expected scuff marks, surface mars, and minor stains, this sign is well preserved.
Would complement any decor or collection. PERFECT for the BEACH!
This particular piece is in very fine condition, with cold-paint flaking on the spout and lid edge decoration noted as this piece's only readily-visualized flaws. (Cold paint refers to paint applied AFTER a piece has been painted, glazed, and fired in a kiln. Because this after-paint is not glazed and fired, it is easily subjected to flaking and disintegration.)
The teapot remains in fabulous, all-original condition with its twisted-wire, original, bail handle intact and in fine condition. The tea pot measures 5.5 inches wide from the edge of its spout and across the body to the opposite side. With its handle upright, the pot measures 7.75 inches tall. The teapot with lid, absent the handle, measures 5.25 inches tall. It is 5.75 inches wide.
As noted previously, the teapot spout presents flaking of its green paint, with two tiny flea bites present on the tip of the spout detected only via touch versus the eye. The pot has no chips, cracks, repairs or repaint. There are very teeny surface rubs on the left cheek, but these are paint flaws which occurred prior to glaze application and firing. There are also two teeny "dots"-- one on the forehead and one just to the inside corner of the right eye that are also flaws created either right before or during firing.
This fabulously RARE piece displays just wonderfully and would be a prized asset in the collection of any advanced collector! And its diminutive size makes it easy for one to display in one's collection!
This toy company exclusively produced toys in the clown image and were fairly quickly in and out of business during the depression era 1930s; thus, very few of this particular toy were produced!
Both Bojangle and his colorful, yellow and green, metal base both measure 7 7/8 inches in length. The base has a metal rod that can be pulled upright that Bojangle is then inserted into to facilitate dancing. When the red button on the base is pushed, Bojangle dances!
Bojangle is nearly constructed entirely of wood with only his yellow hat and arms constructed from metal. Bojangle's condition is perfect as is his metal stand. One very teeny scratch on the base is present that must have resulted from handling over the years. The cardboard box is in fairly good condition with just some surface and edge wear. It is missing one end closure tab as well as the "tuck-in' piece of the primary bottom closure tab. Two end tabs and the primary top closure tab are separated from the box.
A very rare Black Americana toy in quite fabulous condition given its nearly 90 years of age!
The club on the left is stamped with the owner's initials "T.H" and "AC SPAULDING & BROS MAKERS", plus "MODEL D HAND FORGED". The shaft is secure and is modestly split above the hosel. The iron has a tarnished patina and smooth surface. The grip is constructed of brushed leather and is complete. The club measures 40.5 inches from the tip of the toe to the end of the handle.
The club on the right is stamped "ST. ANDREWS" and "MAKERS" with the letter "L" denoting that it is a lady's club. The club face exhibits minor, honorable wear as well as an age-appropriate patina with some rust and pitting on the hosel. The shaft shows appropriate wear, is almost straight, and is secure. The original, smooth leather grip has what appears to be an ancient piece of tape (which can be removed) on each end. The club measures 34.25 inches from the tip of toe to the end of the handle.
Prior to 1900, the vast majority of irons were smooth-faced. During this period, it was common for caddies to use emery cloth to lightly clean off rust from the club heads. Prior to the use of grooves or hand-punched dots being applied to the club face (to enhance backspin), caddies would use the emery cloth to roughen the "sweet spot" on the club face to promote backspin.
Beginning in the 1890's, hand-punched dots on the club face appeared and by 1905; patterns such as scored lines, dots and lines, criss-cross lines with or without dots became the norm.
The end of the smooth-face era for irons occurred around 1910, though some were still offered in catalogues after that date for those who resisted change.
