Offered are 3 fabulous, 1920’s, Black Folk Art Nut Head dolls that depict the life of the poor southern black folk of the Depression era. Of varying heights, the dolls, whose heads are constructed of hand-painted walnuts, depict a cotton picker, a fisherman, and a banjo player. The fisherman, measuring 9.75 inches tall, retains an old tag-label announcing the fisherman’s name, “Toby”. In excellent condition, he wears a wide smile, short pants, mustard-colored felt hat and blue shirt with flowered tie, and proudly displays the two celluloid fish he has caught which hang from his wooden pole. The cotton picker measuring 11 inches tall, wears a somber face while plodding along with his walking stick and burlap bag which overflows with freshly picked cotton. Tagged “Old Black Joe”, he sports a fuzzy gray beard. In excellent condition, he wears long pants, a red, white and blue shirt with red and white checked tie, and black felt hat. The banjo player measures 9.25 inches tall with mouth painted in full song as he sings along to his banjo-playing! He wears tweed pants, and a red and blue checked shirt with brown felt hat. An older gent, he wears a gray fuzzy beard and is tagged “Uncle Ned”. He shows some wear of his 90+ years: his left foot remains attached by the skeletal wire of his base structure but the brown cloth tape that attaches foot with leg has separated (see photo), creating a wiggly foot. His head is also loose but is supported by a piece of scotch tape put in place by the previous owner. While also wiggly, it also remains attached by the skeletal wire. Any further restoration of "Uncle Ned" will be left to the new owner. If he is going to be placed for display in a protective environment (as all collectible dolls should be), he will be fine left just as he is. As cited in the "Encyclopedia of American Folk Art By Gerard C. Wertkin, Lee Kogan, American Folk Art Museum", page 135, the authors note the following: "Most nut head dolls were small, 3-10 inches tall...American in origin...with the character and personality determined by the type of nut used...they fit into the rich, craft heritage of the Southern United States highlands. In the Deep South, nut head dolls often portrayed African Americans in stereotypical roles." A trio of very special dolls who look just fabulous displayed together! These seldom-found dolls are priced separately at $245.00 each.

This handsome Black Memorabilia Male Golliwogg doll comes straight from an English home! A brief history of the Golliwog doll: The Golliwog is based on a Black minstrel doll that the Victorian era illustrator, Florence Kate Upton, born in 1873 of English parents, had played with as a small child in New York. Upton's Golliwog character was first introduced to the world in her 1895 book entitled The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls. Like the rag doll that inspired it, the Golliwog in her book was an ugly creature with very dark, jet black skin, large white-rimmed eyes, red clown lips, and wild, frizzy hair. Golliwogs are typically male and are generally dressed in a jacket, trousers, bow tie, and stand-up collar in a combination of red, white, blue, black, and occasionally yellow colors. Measuring 21.5 inches long, this delightful and appealing cloth Golli is unmarked and is thought, by his original and quite elderly owner, to have been made in the mid 1940's! (She speculates that he could even be a bit older than that, but she remembers not acquiring him until after the end of WWII.) His nose and mouth are hand-stitched and he has round, cloth covered button eyes- the pupils were hand-colored using black ink! His nicely coiffed, black hair appears to have been styled from soft, "stuffed animal-type" fur! Rather interesting and ingenious! He has a machine-stitched, cotton batting stuffed, black sock cloth body. His colorful wardrobe is also machine stitched- green wool mourning coat, gold vest, and red and white polka-dotted cotton pants and matching bow tie! He is in wonderful condition with the exception of some tiny moth holes to the back of his mourning coat (see photos) as well as another tiny moth hole to the back of his right arm and back right pants leg. The polka dot clothing shows the slightest hint of fading. His dark black fur hair also shows some age-related color change to brown at the roots. Hmm...then again...perhaps he's simply overdue for another hair coloring appointment at the Salon! A very sweet addition to one's Black Memorabilia or Golliwogg collection!

Rarely found in today's collector's market and measuring just 4 inches wide x 4.5 high, this early cast iron still bank was produced in England in the 1930s by Chamberlain & Hill. Buyer beware: this is NOT a reproduction!!! Reproductions have the words "Made in England" impressed into the back of the hat as well as a paint distinction: only the "whites" of the eyes are painted white on a reproduction versus the painting of the entire eyelid area on legitimate, vintage cast iron banks (see my photos). This silly caricature bank features a black man's head mounted on two little feet- no body! He wears a red hat labeled, "Save and Smile Money Box" impressed across the front rim. This two piece mold has a coin slot on the top of the back of the head. The bank would have to be unscrewed to be emptied. This all original still bank is in very fine condition with most of its paint remaining intact- no repaint!! A must-have for the serious still bank or Black Memorabilia collector!!
