VeryRARE 1920 Wyandotte Type Black Sambo Dart Toy Game

$135.00

Measuring 13.5" X 21", this vintage, Ca 1920's, "Little Black Sambo" metal game board is similar in style and size to the better known and more common, Wyandotte Black Sambo metal game board. This version is EXTREMELY RARE and is considered to be an extraordinarily scarce Black Memorabilia collectible! I have only seen 2 in 22 years in the antiques business!

This game bears no manufacturer’s mark and retains its original cardboard backing without the metal stand, and, alas, has no (rarely found) game darts!!

Present are multiple surface blemishes, surface scratches, and dents and crimps to the metal that one would expect of a 70+ year old toy -all of which add to the vintage appeal of the piece. Considering the rarity of the item, such imperfections should be viewed by collectors as quite acceptable.

The piece has two very small holes at the top of the game that were likely added later to facilitate display. Please see all photos for representation of condition. Price is markedly reduced to reflect condition and is sold as is. If mint or near mint in condition, this rarely seen game board would command a price of $325 or greater!

White spots in photos are from camera flash and are not representative of any of this game's imperfections.

Fabulously bold visual imagery!

This vintage 1920's cast iron figure is an authentic piece that was carefully hand-painted long ago. $95.00

Measuring 4.25 inches tall, this very interesting and rare bottle stopper is a caricature of Josephine Baker!

Made of either an early plastic or perhaps catalin, this great piece is unmarked. Josephine's features are executed with precision and are accented with brass hoop earrings. The piece is in excellent condition with the exception of minor rubs to the paint here and there. Certainly a rarely found piece of Baker memorabilia!

Josephine Baker (June 3, 1906 – April 12, 1975) was an American-born French entertainer, most noted for her celebrated Folies Bergère singing career. In her early career, she was a feted dancer and is often credited as a movie star, although she only starred in 3 films in her early career. She was given the nicknames "Black Venus" or "Black Pearl" and "Créole Goddess", while in France she was known in the old theatrical tradition as "La Baker". She became a citizen of France in 1937. She is also credited for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement in North America and for being an inspiration to generations of African-American female entertainers.

$38.00

Measuring 5 1/2 inches high x approximately 4 inches wide, this utterly adorable, 1950’s, coin bank entitled, “BONGO – A Nut from the CONGO”, is fashioned from an actual coconut! His face has been hand-painted, he wears a SINGLE brown, pipe cleaner fashioned hoop earring on his left ear (unfortunately, the right hoop earring has been lost since the photo was taken- price thus has been reduced from $58.00 to $38.00), he has a small tuft of brown yarn hair atop his head, and he also wears a wooden “bone” through his painted-on nose!

BONGO appears to have never been unused and is in near mint condition - the only imperfections noted are a few minor and superficial facial paint rubs - and his recently-missing right earring. His wooden platform base bears manufacturer information as well as bank opening instructions (see last photo for details)! A darling addition to one’s Black memorabilia collection priced to sell!

$29.00

With the exception of very minimal wear to edges, this circa 1890s stereoview card is in fine condition!

Labeled #298, "Native Cane Grinders in Sunny Florida", the scene depicts 7 young Black men either chewing on a sugar cane stalk or holding a sugar cane cutting implement.

Printed on the back of the card is a brief history of sugar cane cultivation from its origins in 500 AD China to its introduction in the US in 1675 by the Jesuits. The harvesting process is also discussed.

$595.00

Measuring 6 1/4 inches high x 5 3/4 inches wide, this circa 1930's, VERY RARE, Japan made, Polka Dot Kerchief, Mammy Head String Holder is in near mint condition with no chips, cracks, or hairlines! Mammy is the mate to the Maruhon Ware Mammy series--Cookie Jar, Basket Handle Biscuit Jar, Teapot and related kitchen items-- all made with this same Mammy's face.

The String Holder is stamped "JAPAN" on the back side, and it has a hole in the center of her mouth to accommodate the string! This wonderful piece has expected and typical glaze crazing and even comes complete with vintage string! On the upper right hand side of her forehead, these is a small white spot about 1/4 of an inch long where the face paint was not applied prior to factory glazing (see photo)- a tiny, insignificant manufacturer imperfection that does not detract from this rare piece! The entire piece is glazed with the exception of Mammy's lips which are cold-painted (meaning that the paint was applied after firing). As such, this area of paint would be the most vulnerable to wear, and Mammy does have 2 microscopically-sized specks on her upper lip where the paint has come off. Too tiny to be picked up in a photo!

Please note that photos were taken with a flash, so any white markings on the piece are flash reflections only and not imperfections.

$95.00

This signed, original artwork rendered in 2002 by the emerging New Orleans, self-taught, Folk Artist, L. Sister Raya, measures 16 X 20 inches.

Completed in acrylic paint on acid free water color paper, this artwork has been mounted on acid free foam core which can continue to be used as the artwork's backing when the piece is permanently framed. For the artwork's protection, it has been temporarily sealed in acid-free shrink-wrap which can be easily removed when required.

The vibrant colors in combination with the preacher’s soulful, heavenward gaze make this an appealing and thought-provoking image.

This artwork is further complimented by a transcription of Sister’s interpretation of this art work, “Preacher man prays to God for a word of wisdom to share with his people so that they may hear from God and not from his heart. Preacher man holds a full time job makin stuff with his hands. Preacherman won’t take money from his flock least he may be tempted to become lazy and greedy and lose his true callin. The call of the lord is mighty and hearin his voice clear takes all he got. Devil always slipping round tryin to trip him up. Devil might try to trip you up too, so make sure you seeking the voice of God.”
