Measuring 22 inches long x 14 inches wide, this heavy cardboard poster advertises the American Legion sponsored 6th Annual Minstrel Show At East Hartford Public High School, East Hartford, Connecticut! The March 1954 show was to be a benefit for the town’s Youth Activities, Rehabilitation and Child Welfare. The poster features an interesting caricature of a Black Face Minstrel Gent! Condition and color are quite fine with the exception of some edge roughness which will not be visible when the piece is framed, and evidence of perhaps a grease stain near the “R” in the word Minstrel- just adds a bit of interesting patina to this piece of Black Memorabilia ephemera!

Measuring 6.25 inches long x 5 inches wide, this well detailed, circa 1910, brass ashtray depicts a smiling black male native reclining on a stylized seashell. In fabulous condition with 90+ years of all original surface patina, this phenomenal piece is very highly detailed and displays wonderfully! It authentically depicts the highly fashionable Art Nouveau styling which was so wildly popular at the turn of the 20th century. This brass ashtray promotes the English settlement of the CONGO on the African continent, and thus, the words "CONGO" are impressed across the native's chest. The earliest version of this ashtray was crafted in BRONZE did not feature the Congo label across the native's chest. The extremely rare bronze version of this ashtray is also featured for sale on this website. A must-have piece for the sophisticated Black Americana collector, the brass version is a much more affordable alternative to the Bronze ashtray, if so desired!

A vividly colorful piece, this 1940's vintage, all-original, chalkware Black Mammy memo paper holder measures 9.75 inches high x 5.75 inches wide. This particular color and form is less seldom seen on today's collectible's market! Mammy's paper memo pad is original to the piece; however, she is missing her original pencil which would slip into the hole in her right hand and down into the broom top to form the broom handle! A present day pencil may be used as a replacement. Condition is quite good with some tiny, age-related, surface and edge flecks as seen in photos. No repaint, cracks, repairs, no breaks! No maker's mark.

Measuring 10.25 inches wide x 4.50 inches high, this untouched, all-original, double-sided, solid, one half-inch-thick-wooden, circa 1920s sign is an extraordinarily RARE piece of Black American history-- an artifact of the "Jim Crow" era when segregation of the African American race was unfortunately, most commonplace. The origin of this sign is unknown, but it once hung on either the interior of a bus or railroad car designating the section of the bus or rail car where African-Americans were required to sit. One side reads “FOR WHITES” and the other side reads “FOR COLORED” thus separating the two races on public conveyance vehicles-- segregating the African-Americans to the back of the vehicle. This historically significant sign is in all-original condition and has some paint loss and scratching typical of its age and use as noted in photos. The “white” side has a horizontal black mark running above the word "white". A horizontally running gouge is present in the wood on the “colored” side and runs through the word "FOR". It is approximately 1/16th to 1/8th of an inch deep. Please see photos. None of these age-characteristics impact the physical integrity of the sign and are more than appropriate to the age and purpose of the piece. An utterly phenomenal, extremely RARE, one-of-a-kind, museum-worthy piece of Black American history! Please take a moment to view a second "Jim Crow" Segregationist Era sign that I currently have the pleasure of offering. It is featured in the final photo, and of course, is priced separately.

Rarely found in today's collector's market and measuring just 4 inches wide x 4.5 high, this early cast iron still bank was produced in England in the 1930s by Chamberlain & Hill. Buyer beware: this is NOT a reproduction!!! Reproductions have the words "Made in England" impressed into the back of the hat as well as a paint distinction: only the "whites" of the eyes are painted white on a reproduction versus the painting of the entire eyelid area on legitimate, vintage cast iron banks (see my photos). This silly caricature bank features a black man's head mounted on two little feet- no body! He wears a red hat labeled, "Save and Smile Money Box" impressed across the front rim. This two piece mold has a coin slot on the top of the back of the head. The bank would have to be unscrewed to be emptied. This all original still bank is in very fine condition with most of its paint remaining intact- no repaint!! A must-have for the serious still bank or Black Memorabilia collector!!

"Beloved Belindy" was the MAMMY of the well-known Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy dolls!!! This rarely found copy was written and illustrated by the renowned author of a number of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy stories of the period, Johnny Gruelle. The book was published in both the United States and Great Britain in 1926, by the P.F. Volland Company of Joliet, Illinois. This copy has superficial scratches to the front and back covers, wear on book cover edges, subtle bending of the cover boards and some staining to the back cover (see photos). The book retains a 1929 dated inscription as well as pages numbered in pencil by a previous owner. A couple of pages also have minor tearing and staining. The binding is super-tight and all pages remain present. The book is eleven chapters in length, approximately 88 un-numbered pages. Book is filled with a variety of black-ink and full-color illustrations as represented in photos. PLEASE NOTE: in the photos, the printing seems light and faded- not so! It is merely the function of over-lighting or light reflection. A wonderful and truly RARE book not to be missed--- it currently lists in Black Memorabilia books at $200-250!
