This handsome brass and walnut pharmacy PILL MACHINE was used by 19th century druggists in a Southington, Connecticut, apothecary shoppe. The unique quality of this machine is its substantially narrow width given the fact that it has 24 pill-making tubes. Per example: this machine is only 5.25 inches wide while I own a 12 tube machine that is only 3/4 of an inch narrower! Also, the pill machine is marked on both pieces by the maker, WIRZ, a rarity for pill machines. The pill machine was successfully developed to increase a pharmacist's pill production. This particular pill machine has 24 tubes or grooves; however, pill machines were also made with 12, 18 or even up to 50 tubes! The condition of this wonderful apothecary tool of the trade is very good with the normal surface scratches, blemishes and minor dings all of which contribute to the warm, rich patina one would expect of an antique tool of this age. The bright sunlight makes the wood appear light and washed-out- please disregard. The color of the wood has appropriately darkened and gained a rich patina over the years. The base measures 12.5”L x 5.25”W, and the handle is 14 inches long. The base and handle are matching units as evidenced by the #428 stamped on each part. 19th century Pill Machines are becoming increasingly difficult to find in this wonderful condition. A must addition for any pharmacy/apothecary collection. |
