1890s Foil Reverse Ptd Glass Boston Clothing Shop Sign
Measuring 21 inches wide x 15 inches high, this utterly gorgeous, Victorian era, Boston, Massachusetts, Fur and Hat Shoppe sign advertises "J. Brasier, of Front Street Belleville, (Boston) Importer of Fine Hats & Furs". The sign also states that the proprietor "Repairs Fur", and provides "Made-to-Order Garments in First Class Style"!

This sign remains in its original frame complete with original wood back panels. The frame itself is a beaded oak molding. The sign is edged in a 1.25 inch wide black foil banding with the advertising background foil colored in an iridescent copper/rust. All lettering, including the lovely, Victorian Woman logo draped in a luxurious fur, is hand-painted in gold.

Overall condition is excellent! Over the past 100 years, some areas of the foil have crystalized where the foil has come in contact with the pane of glass, creating a "sparkling diamond" effect over the copper/rust or black foil areas. This is a natural result of age, and it does not detract from the beauty of this very early, visually striking, advertising piece.

This sign was extremely difficult to photograph due to 2 "culprits": the foil backing is extremely light-sensitive so it reflects everything, and this was coupled with the fact that the advertising, itself, is reversed-painted on a pane of glass! This "sparkling diamond" effect appears more evident in the photos than it appears when viewed "in person". Photos were taken under the best-contrived conditions, but still do not reflect the beauty of this piece when it is viewed in person.

A rare and lovely Victorian foil advertising piece!
